TheXTech: Possible Changes to the Fire Toad and Ice Toad Sprites
I'd like to discuss a minor, but irritating issue with the default Toad sprites. The Fire Toad is the normal Toad sprite with the red dots being recolored to blue. This has caused confusion for Mario Maker and NSMBU Players, as blue is the default color of the Toad playable there.
Even ignoring that, a minor color change doesn't do a good job at indicating a Power Up. Same applies to the Ice Toad.
I'd therefore like to propose two possible improvements:
1. REPLACE THE TOAD SPRITES WITH THOSE FROM SUPER TALKING TIME BROS.
This is my favorite approach. I do it for my private sets, and those that I share with others.
It has several advantages:
+ Full Consistency with modern Nintendo Games
+ Clearer Implication of Powered Up states
+ A more harmonic alignment with the often used SMB3 aesthetics
+ The Character feels more unique than a Red Toad would
However, there is also a disadvantage:
- It may cause distortion with Story Elements that assume a Red Toad
2. CHANGE ONLY THE FIRE AND ICE SPRITES TO BE MORE SIMILAR TO SMM/NSMBU
+ Clearer Implication of Powered Up states
+ Default sprites retains consistency with old episodes & SMB2, Fire/Ice Sprites get consistency with modern games
+ SMB2-Style aligns with Toad's health system
- SMB2-Style may stand out negatively from it's environment, especially in the presence of other Toads
- Red Toads are generic
Personally I favor the first option, and most people that I have asked prefer the TTB Sprites as well. But either of these options would be an improvement imo, so I look forward to read what you have to say!
