TheXTech: Possible Changes to the Fire Toad and Ice Toad Sprites

I'd like to discuss a minor, but irritating issue with the default Toad sprites. The Fire Toad is the normal Toad sprite with the red dots being recolored to blue. This has caused confusion for Mario Maker and NSMBU Players, as blue is the default color of the Toad playable there.

Even ignoring that, a minor color change doesn't do a good job at indicating a Power Up. Same applies to the Ice Toad.

I'd therefore like to propose two possible improvements:

1. REPLACE THE TOAD SPRITES WITH THOSE FROM SUPER TALKING TIME BROS.

This is my favorite approach. I do it for my private sets, and those that I share with others.

It has several advantages:

+ Full Consistency with modern Nintendo Games
+ Clearer Implication of Powered Up states
+ A more harmonic alignment with the often used SMB3 aesthetics
+ The Character feels more unique than a Red Toad would


However, there is also a disadvantage:

- It may cause distortion with Story Elements that assume a Red Toad

2. CHANGE ONLY THE FIRE AND ICE SPRITES TO BE MORE SIMILAR TO SMM/NSMBU

+ Clearer Implication of Powered Up states
+ Default sprites retains consistency with old episodes & SMB2, Fire/Ice Sprites get consistency with modern games
+ SMB2-Style aligns with Toad's health system


- SMB2-Style may stand out negatively from it's environment, especially in the presence of other Toads
- Red Toads are generic

Personally I favor the first option, and most people that I have asked prefer the TTB Sprites as well. But either of these options would be an improvement imo, so I look forward to read what you have to say!

New Toad sprite idea

I think, that would better fit with SMBX, if the fire toad sprite would not change, and the ice toad's cap would have exchanged colors (and blue would be a bit darker).

I like the idea, but the truth is a little bad that some episodes are broken because of that

Hi there!

After some reviewing and thinking, it's possible to provide both sets (old and new) and let use one of them by user's choice. The only condition new Toad should match by the shape with the old to prevent possible mask glitches when playing old episodes with masked GIFs and where Toad's recolor hadn't provided the masks.

Or something also.

I'm gonna look into reshaping the Talking Toad, but it will probably take me a week or two. In the meanwhile, I have made an edit of the Fire and Ice Toad for the SMB2 set:

Done! The Reshaped Talking Toad as well as the SMB2 Toad Updates are in the attached ZIP.

I also included Mask-GIF conversions (made with PGE Maintainer) and their MD5 Checksums to confirm that the shapes are really identical.
