Will it be possible to create true Metroid styled projects Where the game essentially takes place on one big roam able map?
It's sorta possible in SMBX but very limited to what you can do.

Yes, with global switches and expressions we will can able do these nonlinear episodes:
- character will collect items or weapons
- some doors can be opened by switch in the other level
- without some items and skills, character will haven't possibles to pass some danger places.
etc.
Also with lua we can define more than 4 switches

Good stuff, RPG features would be an integral part of this engine imo.

I've trying to made Terraria dungeon level in SMBX, but it was limited to 100 events and unsatisfying (Terraria is second Redigit project, after SMBX C&D'd by Nintendo), so seeing this "do this, it'll trigger that, you can pass further" would be nice in full PGE.
