New graphics for PGE

Before we continue down, i want to state that these works of mine are not allowed to be used in commercial games, and if used by anyone credit must be issued. Failure to do so or these graphics ending up commercially used will result in me taking legal action.
(i realize that's probably not the best way of protecting my work but that lawyer stuff made no sense that was shown to me else where)

In light of the fact that Wholstand is doing his best to avoid copy-write infringement, and plans to have original resources, i am taking it upon myself to make some tiles and more that look nothing like what Mario games use, but can serve the same functions without causing copy-write issues... mentioned in a thread here on the forums.

So this thread is for feedback on anything i make.
Keep in mind it won't look ANYTHING like mario's graphics.. for instance.. we can't really have blocks with question marks, so i thought up some sort of alternative.

Okay so gonna just post everything i made up until this point right in this first post.

Gonna post more when i can.

New Enemy!

I call it a Punken. Replaces the Super Mario World Goomba.
I might update him later... maybe make one you can't jump on because it has a saw blade in it's head making it look like a Moe-hawk lol..
Lol.. and here it is >_< did not take long.
Image
I call it a... Punken Rocker >_< Anyhow, it's got a saw blade stuck in it's freaking head!
If you jump on him, i'ts gonna hurt lol >_<

-NEW STUFF!-
Fuck, it took me awhile to get back in the groove, but here are some new graphics.
A replacement for the SMB2 grass cliffs and the desert cliffs.

Desert Cliffs replacement.

Now we got some SMW replacements for the cliffs they use..

I left the same number for them above for the block they replace, so all you have to do is drop them into a game you're working on and they should show up fine.
I got more i am working on.

Really nice, I just finished an Airship tileset that could replace the SMB3 airships. It looks really similar but it's not quite the same ;)

Also Raster started doing some GFX for PGW too, so we have 3 different people who make GFX now, so we should try to all go for the same style somehow.

That's rather difficult for me adapt to other people's styles i'm afraid.
And your air ship tiles do work rather well... still feels maybe a little too similar though, maybe slightly change the color of the wood just a little, as it is.. it looks like the same pallet that SMA-SMB3 uses.
The style though for sure is different enough.
Personally i was planning to go for something metallic when i got to those graphics.

My hope is that Wohlstand adapts some sort of tileset feature so that we don't have to work on each and every tile seperatly.. maybe a tool that lets you simple make a tile set for the graphics needed, but takes said tileset and separates each tile for you so as to cut down on the work load, and make the workflow much simpler... having to do it by hand right now is VERY time consuming and irritating.

Yes, that's true. I also already thought about doing something metallic as airship, and I already tried switching the colors up a bit, I'll be sure to update this when I'm finished.

Maybe try just making them darker? Just a suggestion though, nothing i may say you should do... should you do.. i just kinda.. throw ideas out.. you can do what ever you like.. i'm just making sure you realize you don't gotta do anything i suggest.

Haha it's okay, that's actually a good idea.

I made it a bit darker and gave it a different color tone, how does it look now?

Much better actually, has like a reddish wood tone now, rather than an orangish wood tone.
I noticed one little thing though and i hope you don't mind that i fixed it.. there was shades that were too similar, and i made them look a bit different.. compare yours with this one and i am sure you will notice what shade or color i am talking about.

I don't think there is a need to worry about this too much. Up till a extent, a lot of foss game projects I've seen use ideas (and in some cases, graphical designs) from commercial games (especially the so called "clone games" like supertuxkart, hedgewars and others). It definitely is helpful to be as unique as possible though!

So to get to the point, I'd just like to point out how the classic foss game SuperTux has a bunch of things similar to the Mario series as a platformer (including having ? blocks styled differently), and yet doesn't seem to have any problems with Nintendo AFAIK.

Best of luck to you and GLuigiX with the new graphics!

@Veudekato
It looks different enough though. The bushes are what i am assuming you're speaking of.
They're pretty different, there are no bushes with that patern or pallet in any mario game.

@Nexia
I still don't feel comfy doing that... specially since Nintendo is known for going after people for making games that are too similar.
Figure i will stray as far as possible from it. To be safe.

On a side note.. i been working on the ground tiles a bit more.
REMOVED UNTIL THE RULES BECOME MORE CLEAR
Top is for caves.. the bottom is for grass, but i needed to know people's opinion on if i should keep that patern the ground uses for the one that's above ground? Or maybe just make an original one?
Any thoughts?

I quite like the one you're using now actually. I mean, even later down the track if you extended this and made custom stuff to go with these default replacements, you may even be able to join both tilesets similarly to cave tileset in SMB3. Those tilesets remind me somewhat of Kirby as well. Either way, I think you're on to something good here. Best of luck for whatever else you come up with.

I might chip in some graphics as well, or at least once I update my GFX Pack.

As a reminder, my works are not for commercial use, they're meant for recreational use only, and credit must be issued..
If you want graphics for commercial use, i can be commissioned for original works, but the ones placed here are not for commercial use.

Some more ground graphics i worked on recently.
REMOVED UNTIL THE RULES BECOME MORE CLEAR
I think these came out really well.. i feel like i am on a roll now!
REMOVED UNTIL THE RULES BECOME MORE CLEAR
The new Punch Blocks i been working on... i think they look better than what i had going on before.
The last 4 blocks near the bottom are just for every day standing use.

Mikepjr your graphics is really good. You're very good graphical artist! I suggest you to change those "I Blocks" to "P Blocks", so they will mean "PlatGEnWohl".
But this is just a suggestion.

by Mikepjr
I guess it could be a P... but the I stands for Item meaning some sort of Item is inside... where as the traditional ? meant you had no idea what was there until you hit it, the problem with that is once you hit it the question mark is meaningless.
That and i was staying away from Kid Chameleon, the blocks in his game had a P as well.. i was trying to be a bit original i suppose.

I think the next thing i make should be some castle tiles
Though i do want to work on more player sprites.

Choices.

Okay so, here are some tiles for the surfaces where you walk for castles.
REMOVED UNTIL THE RULES BECOME MORE CLEAR
Again, these are not for commercial use, and credit would be appreciated, do NOT take credit for something i made.

REALLY need to come up with some other things.
I had some ideas for monsters that replace Goombas.. i was thinking maybe something generic like a blob or slime creature that goes SPLAT when you jump on them kinda like when you jump on goombas they go flat.
Not sure what could replace the Koopa troopa.
Already got an idea for a plant that replaces all those piranha plant creatures.

A walking log creature can replace the Koopa and a walking rock creature can replace the Buzzy Beetle and a bunny that throws carrots can replace the Hammer Bro.

Hmm the log idea sounds interesting... not sure how i would go about that... i was thinking... some other shelled creature... like a snail.... or.. maybe a crab?
As for the Bunny throwing Carrots.. THAT is genius!

Little update... i'm removing my work and moving on for now.. i read the rules and some jagoff decided to ask about adding rules so people won't curse.. F that man!
I'm in my mid 30s.. i turn 35 this saturday... i'm not going to be part of any community that censors me!
