How to make an Item Counter ?

It's possible to make a counter for the Dragon Coins or Normal Coins, making the player need them to do a certain action, like unlock a door or an Item ?.
If the answer is Yes, could someone helpe me with this ?

i'm not good with variables, but you can create a variable then two events
the first event will add 1 to the variable and will be triggered everytime you collect a coin/dragon coin so it'll count the number of items collected
the other will be activated when the variable will be high enough. the trigger will unlock the item or the door.

Like what you do with redcoins ? You get so many that you need a star or in this case unlock a door ?
