Unlike in the New Super Mario Bros. franchise, normal Thwomps can destroy blocks as well, although only one row at a time unlike Super Thwomps which can destroy a whole column in one smash.
I think in Mario Maker, a thwomp can break every block being breakable by the player (one row at a time), when a super twhomp can break ice blocks and stone blocks. Looking at some SMM video, a thwomp can also hit a "?" block like the player.

It is the super twomp which destroys blocks.
You should destroy the yellow blocks. In NSMBW also it destroys some blocks had is the castle. (Which might add)
