On the pause menu for the world map, you aren't able to switch players by pressing left and right. Also, if you save and quit from the world map, and go back into the same file after selecting a different player than last time, you will be the same player you were last time you were on the file.

Hey i have that same bug too
My character was link but i quit the game and restart
After i choose mario, its still Link
