All of my events trigger at the same time!

So i'm making a level where 8 different events need to play in succession to play out 8 different messages at the beginning of the level after hitting a switch (for dialogue purposes). A few of these events also have sound effects to give a bit more "character" to it, and the very last one plays a different music track. However, After I set the 1st event to trigger the 2nd one, the 2nd to trigger the 3rd, and so on, and I test the level, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY EVENTS trigger all at once, including all the sound effects, AND the music starting up!
I was able to sorta mitigate this issue by delaying each of my events for 1 frame before starting it, and while that did the trick, it causes my game to slowly frame advance as a result, and it just looks ugly and choppy. There has to be some way to do it that i'm not seeing...
