Can cheat codes be triggered via lua?

In my level I'm trying to implement 3 double cherries for the purpose of a bonus area. Right now I have a sign that just tells the player to input "supermario4", which works well enough, but I feel like it would be much more seamless to just have a lua event trigger the activation of said cheat code automatically.

It would be even more seamless to make the game give you one clone every time you touched a double cherry (which at this point is just a reskinned question mark mushroom). Do we know the lua code to produce one clone?

Thanks in advance if you can answer either of these questions.
