Generally you can catch that with a pcall. But I wouldn't recommend debug message boxes as a gameplay element.

You have to press F11 twice. Once you want to start recording and the when you want to end it. But don't record for too long, or else SMBX might crash. I know that filesizes might get huge. Something I would like to add that NPC-0 is used to "simulate" collisions. More informations are on the wiki.
